Tint percentage refers to Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — the percentage of visible light that passes through the glass and film combined. A lower number means a darker appearance.

The Basics

What Is Visible Light Transmission?

Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is the percentage of visible light that passes through a window — including both the glass and any film applied to it. The measurement is always of the combined result.

A 70% VLT window lets through 70% of visible light and blocks 30%. It looks nearly clear. A 5% VLT window lets through only 5% — blocking 95% of visible light — and appears very dark from outside.

The lower the percentage, the darker the tint. Understanding different tint levels starts with this scale — it applies consistently whether you are choosing a dyed film, a metallic film, or a ceramic film. The technology changes the heat and UV performance, but the percentage always describes how much visible light passes through.

Factory glass also has its own VLT rating. When you add aftermarket tint film to existing glass, the result is a combined VLT lower than either the glass or the film alone. This is why knowing your glass's existing transmission matters before choosing a film darkness level.

20% creates a noticeably dark appearance from outside — exterior visibility into the vehicle is significantly reduced during daytime. Nighttime outward visibility through 20% tint is more limited than lighter films.

5%Very Dark

Often called "limo tint," 5% VLT blocks nearly all visible light. The glass appears nearly opaque from outside during the day. Nighttime outward visibility is significantly limited — this level is not appropriate for every window position.

Darker VLT alone does not determine heat rejection. Film technology — particularly ceramic films — plays a larger role in solar heat rejection than shade level. A high-performance ceramic film at 50% may reject significantly more heat than a basic dyed film at 20%.

Common Misconception

Ceramic Tint Does Not Mean Darker Tint

Ceramic window film is a premium film technology — it is not a darkness level. A 35% ceramic film and a 35% dyed film appear exactly the same darkness from the outside. Both allow 35% of visible light through the glass.

The difference is in what you cannot see: ceramic film uses nano-ceramic particles to reject solar heat and block ultraviolet and near-infrared radiation at a higher rate than standard dyed or metallic films — without affecting how much visible light passes through.

In practical terms: if you want a dark appearance, choose a lower VLT percentage. If you want better heat and UV performance at any given darkness level, a ceramic film is the upgrade path — not going darker.

Nevada regulates window tint by minimum VLT on certain windows. For the windows immediately beside the driver, the law requires a minimum light transmission level. Rear windows are subject to different rules tied to whether compliant outside mirrors are present.
